Tiles, pots, brick and toilets are popularly known as ceramics.Most of People are not aware of new class of modern or technical ceramics such as Nasa's Spacecraft,engine components, artificial bones and even pencil lead. Ceramics teeth (=dental porcelain) are one of those advanced ceramics.They are translucent and aesthetically natural and also it is Non allergy compared to metal bond.As Ceramics have been accompanying the human race since ancient times,the first dental teeth was decorative meaning to disguise missing teeth for ladies in 18th century.
“Ceramics”の語源は、ギリシア語のkeramos＝burnt earth“大地を焼いたもの”。土は地球からのギフト、焼き物は、コーヒーカップから義歯、NASAの宇宙船の部品に至るまですべてが人工物。
縄文時代から土と人間との関わりは長く深いものの、土というとどうしてもタイルやテーブルウェア、レンガや衛生陶器を想像しがちですが、現代ではそれがセラミックだと気づかれていないものも多く、その一つにセラミックの歯や骨もあります。
18世紀の貴婦人たちは歯がない人が多く、飾り用としてセラミックの歯が使われていてウェッジウッド製の義歯もあったというのは、面白いストーリーです。
